Sketch Chosen
Improved Sketch
I made some changes to improve my previous sketch by refining the hands to look more vulnerable with adding visible cracks, emphasizing the sense of struggle and fragility. Followed by the swirling storms pulling the hands, making it feel more desperate and symbolic of reaching the star, enhancing the emotional depth of the previous sketch.
Process
After finalizing my sketch, i manually colored it using a mix of watercolor, color pencils, and markers to enhance depth and contrast. i used grey as the hand base color to make it look like a cracking statue. In this version i made the star look more glowing, popping out against the dark swirling background making it clearer.
After done, i made some improvement and fix some mistake i made by adding shading, shadows, and glowing effects digitally on ibis paint improving the depth of the piece.
Final Design
Reaching for Light
- Decision made in the design : The design i choose in this artwork were made to show contrast, movement and emotional depth. Using glowing effect on the star as the focal point to immediately draw the viewer's attention. The hands reaching for the star were positioned carefully to create a sense of struggle and desperation. Swirling storms in the background creates a chaotic vibes, also used to show movement. I choose dark blue color for the background to make it feel like a void making it look mystery and lost, following with the glowing yellow in the middle creating a strong contrast. The texture refined by combination of traditional watercolor, pencil colors, markers and ibis paint adds more depth and strong effects making the piece looks more alive and interesting.
- Meaning and purpose of the design : This artwork symbolizes the pursuit of dreams, ambition, and the challenges faced in reaching one's dream. The glowing star represents hope, peace, or an unattainable desire, while the hands reflect the struggle of individuals trying to reach it. The swirling pattern enhance the feeling of chaos, representing external obstacle and internal conflicts. The piece serves as a visual metaphor of the journey towards our dreams, which is often lifted with difficulty but remains worth striving for.
- Design principle employed :
Repetition
The dark cracked hand contrast with the light blueish storm, and the yellow star contrast the dark blue void making both stars and storm more pop up. There is contrast in the layout as well. The hands and swirling background creates an organic, chaotic feel, while the centered star provide stability.
Emphasis
The star is the focal point, standing out due to its brightness and positioning in the center.
Balance
The hands are symmetrically arranged, creating visual harmony despite the chaotic background.
Symbolism
The cracked and breaking hands represents vulnerability, struggle, and emotional turmoil, while the swirling background adds to the chaotic atmosphere emphasizing internal conflict. The star symbolize our hopes and dreams. The contrast between dark and light elements represents the idea of hope trying to break through despair.
Reflection
In this task, i refined my artwork by adding cracks and the storm dragging the hands for vulnerability. I used repetition, contrast, movement, emphasis, balance and symbolism, to improve and made the composition more expressive. Mixing watercolor, color pencils, and markers helped add depth to my artwork, and it helped me learn that details enhance and affect the storytelling making them more interesting.
Feedback
Week 6 : Improved sketch looks more alive.
Week 7 : Final outcome looks amazing the glow effects makes the artwork pop.
