picture source (here) , picture address (here)

PHASE 1 : OBSERVATION

The Starry Night is a landscape oil-on-canvas painting that captures attention with unique chaotic art style. At first glance, the large cypress tree stands out, stealing viewer's eye. The main color used in this piece are yellow and blue, creating a strong contrast making the stars glow brightly. It has a chaotic brushstrokes and energetic movements, yet this painting still feels visually pleasing and balanced. The most noticeable elements in this artwork are the large tree and radiant stars. Overall, the painting appears to depict a beautiful night in a peaceful village, with a lively blue sky.

PHASE 2 : ANALYSIS

The noticeable design principles in this painting is contrast. The contrast between the bright yellow stars and the deep blue sky bring the artwork to life, makes the night feel vibrant and full of energy. Besides, it also has movement through the swirling brush strokes leading viewer's eye naturally across the sky. The big cypress tree in the left side of painting acts as a focal point, immediately drawing attention before guiding the viewer's eye to the swirling sky. It's dark, bold form contrasts nicely with the bright background creating a balance composition. The placement of objects, rolling hills, village, tree and sky creates a sense of depth and harmony. Despite the chaotic vibes and feelings, these elements work well, makes the painting visually engaging. Viewer's eye is guided in a circular motion starting from the cypress tree, moving to starts, and finally ended up on the beautiful village, making the piece feels well structured. This arrangement enhances the emotional impact of the artworks, helping the viewer understand its message : "Beauty can exists within chaos".

PHASE 3 : INTERPRETATION

Van Gogh painting named The Starry Night was painted in June 1889. This piece of artwork reflects his emotional and artistic vision during his time at the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum. The swirling sky and glowing stars bring out a sense of movement and intensity, might possibly represent his longing for peace. The painting catch well the contrast of the wild energetic sky and still village below, symbolizing the coexistence of chaos and peace. It was not just an depiction of a beautiful night scene but also as an expression of Van Gogh's emotions and thoughts. It shows a dreamlike atmosphere, where the stars shine with a sense of hope despite the chaotic sky. The usage of bold colors and wild expressive brushstrokes turns an ordinary piece into something more personal and symbolic. Overall, the Starry Night depicts a message that beauty can exist even in moments of struggle.

SKETCH AND RATIONALE

IDEA 1 :  Reaching for Light

Using movement and repetition (hands), this piece represents the struggle and yearning for hope within darkness. The hands reaching for the star (focal point) shows him trying to achieve his dream, find guidance, or escape though times. Reminder to keep having hopes and reaching for something better, even when things feel difficult.

IDEA 2 : Hope Within Despair

The fragile figure in the middle of space (balance), symbolizing the feeling of being lost in depression (purple stroke as movement). Their body fades, yet still holding onto a glowing star, representing hope (unity). Despite the darkness surrounding them, the light remains, showing the quiet fight to keep going.

IDEA 3 : Beyond the Lock

This piece presents a contrast to the previous ideas, depicting a warm bright day beyond the keyhole (emphasis). The orange silhouette figure is his imagination of him enjoying the golden daylight while in reality the figure remains isolated in darkness (contrast) (darkness inside as negative space), symbolizing hope and freedom, emphasizing the longing for peace and better reality outside their confinement.

FEEDBACK

WEEK 4 : its not about improving the original artist work, but improve their idea and create a whole new artwork. (Imagine what you will create and think if u were Van Gogh)

WEEK 5 : The first idea is the best sketch, it has strong unification of elements and grouping. Each elements are somewhat related. Idea 2 has too many elements and less authentic. Idea 3 is less authentic and its replicated more.
