INSTRUCTION

TASK 3

We were asked to create our own font in this task by drafting it in grid paper with different lettering pen and marker, then digitalized it into Adobe Illustrator and generate our font in Fontlab.

Research
Fig 1 Anatomy of type

Before we start making our font, this is the things that I need to be aware of this Anatomy in type.

Sketches

Fig 2 Sketches

This is my 4 best font sketches that I made in grid paper. Our lecturer actually suggest us to do the all of the alphabet from A to Z so it would be easier for us when doing our poster. She also suggest us to try doing in both uppercase and lowercase to see the variation. I came out with 2 different style, the first one is lettering style font, and the others is serif with 2 lines (thick and thin). After consulting with my lecturer, this is the 4 sketches that she approved. From that, I decided to proceed my process with the uppercase serif font.

Identify references
Fig 3 Font given

Before I start to digitalize, I try to found a similar font to mine from the 10 font given, but it turns out my font is quite complex and none of the 10 look close to mine so after consulting with my lecturer, I decided to go through DaFont to find some similar font as my guide.

Fig 3.1 Houston font in Dafont

After surfing on DaFont, I found 1 font named HOUSTON it looks similar to my font but different, so i ended up choosing this as my guide and reference.

Deconstruct references

Fig 4 Deconstruction

Next, I deconstruct the R uppercase from the font HOUSTON to observe and study the form of the letter, on how its shaped and constructed, this will make my progress easier when doing my own font.

Digitalize final font design

Developing the final font in FontLab 7

Fig 6 Trying out my font and kerning in Fontlab

After copy and pasting my letters into Fontlab7, I did some kerning and try typing it to see how it looks.

Done with fontlab, I download my font and try typing it into Illustrator and it works, now I proceed into the next step which is making poster with my font.

Poster

Next I made an A4 poster in Illustrator with the font I made named 2 line serif. Then I came out with 2 different designs.

After some discussion with my lecturer, she approved both of my designs and i decide to choose the first design as my final output.

REFLECTION

From this task and exercises, I learned how to do construct and do my own font. At first the progress is quite easy but after i keep progressing, I realize that this task is quite complicated since we need to keep making the alphabet on each font looks consistent. After done with this task, I also realize that some font actually is not symmetrical but sometimes the illusion tricks our eyes which tricks our mind to think that it looks symmetrical to the others.

FEEDBACK

Week 8 - General Feedback: Ms. Vit told us to see and take inspiration from our other classmates. Ms. Vit also suggest us to use the mac lab to try digitalised our fontlab since it's a paid app.
Week 8 - Specific Feedback: Ms. Vit approved and liked few of my design and suggest me to start try digitalizing it in Adobe Illustrator.

Week 9 - General Feedback: We need to done digitalize it in illustrator by next week so we can proceed to fontlab.
Week 9 - Specific Feedback: -  (none because I'm still processing it in Illustrator)

Week 10 - General Feedback: Ms.Vit suggest us to try fontlab in lab computer first before we start doing it in our device.
Week 10 - Specific Feedback: I struggle with some arches in few alphabet and Ms.Vit suggest me to find a new font to use it as my base guide for the arches.

Week 11 - General Feedback: We were asked to go to lab computer D7.03 to do our font there since the demo version have some restriction.
Week 11 - Specific Feedback: Ms. Vit approved my digitalized version and ask me to finish it in fontlab for next week.

Week 12 - General Feedback: We were asked to choose a quote that's about typography and try to put it in A4 size to see how it looks.
Week 12 - Specific Feedback: (-)

Week 13 - General Feedback: Finish and submit the poster in the blog by today (15 July).
Week 13 - Specific Feedback: If possible, Ms.Vit suggest me to try create more layout with my font to see if it can still be improve or not.

FURTHER READING

Typographic System - Kimberly Elam

Typographic Systems by Kimberly Elam is a book where Elam combine the ideas with visual examples which will help students and designers understand how the system works, not only that but also why it matters. The book encourage creative designs while still maintain the design clear and readable.

What I learned and read in this book :
1. Axial System  - Align elements along a central axis to create clear and linear layouts

2. Radial System - To give a feeling of movement or energy, spread out content from a center point

3. Dilatational System - Organizes text in circles that grow outward is great for a bold look

4. Random System - Placing things without fixed order makes it feels playful, wild and more creative

5. Grid System - Use straight lines to place elements neatly or to divide space so it will look classic, clear, and balanced

6. Transitional System - Slowly moves elements across the page to create a flow or direction

7. Modular System - Building layout with repeated block is good for structure and order

8. Bilateral System - Balance both sides of the design which makes it looks neat , formal and elegant.
